How Dental Insurance Works

Dental benefits information on computer screen

There are a few different types of dental insurance. Many people choose a PPO plan, which allows you to visit any dentist or specialist, even without a referral. Benefits can vary between plans, but the following coverage is fairly standard:

  • Preventive care, such as cleanings, exams, and X-rays, is often 100% covered.
  • Basic services, usually including fillings and simple extractions, are usually up to 80% covered.
  • Major services, such as crowns and some types of oral surgery, may be up to 50% covered.
  • Orthodontia is not always covered, but some premium plans will pay for up to 50% of the cost of care.
  • Cosmetic services are almost never covered.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance is designed to help you pay for services that affect your systemic health. Sadly, it does not usually apply to preventive services, although in some cases, it may help to pay for oral surgery or other major treatments. Dental insurance, on the other hand, has a strong focus on prevention. Its primary aim is to help you avoid oral health issues if possible.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

At Frisco Dental Care, we may be able to help you use your dental insurance benefits whether or not we are in your plan’s network.

In-Network Coverage

If a practice is in-network with a dental plan, it simply means they have a contract that controls prices, helping both patients and the insurance company to benefit financially. We are proud to be in-network with many popular insurance plans, including:

  • Aetna
  • Ambetter
  • Ameritas
  • BCBS
  • Cigna
  • Colonial Life
  • Delta Dental
  • GEHA
  • Guardian
  • Humana
  • MetLife
  • Sun Life
  • UMR
  • United Concordia
  • United Healthcare

Out-of-Network

Even if we are not in your plan’s network, we still invite you to call us to find out how we can help you use your PPO benefits. Very often, patients find that they get to enjoy many of the same benefits whether they visit an in-network or out-of-network provider.
